Following the calling of a deep rooted desire to serve, most likely instilled by his mother, a pious Buddhist and philanthropist himself, Sumathipala entered the world of Politics in 2008. In 2009 he was appointed the Chief Organizer of the Sri Lanka Freedom Party – one of Sri Lanka’s oldest Political parties, for the Borella electorate, a key electorate in the Capital city. That year also saw him elected to the Western Provincial Council.
In 2010, Sumathipala was elected to the Parliament of Sri Lanka and served in the government of HE President Mahinda Rajapaksa as Deputy Minister – Skills Development & Vocational Training.
He also held key positions is several committees of the Parliament.
In 2015, Hon. Sumathipala was elected to Parliament of HE President Maithripala Sirisena through the National list and served from 2015 – 2018 as its Deputy Speaker,
During his tenure as the Deputy Speaker of Parliament, Hon. Sumathipala played an integral and catalytically role in the upholding of democracy and the rule of law. He also led many committees and initiatives that laid the groundwork for Sri Lanka’s upgrade to an Emerging Economy status in 2019. These included serving as:
In 2019 under the new Government of His Excellency Gotabaya Rajapaksa he served as the State Minister State Minister of Technology & Innovation
Thilanga Sumathipala continues to serve the people as the Vice President of the Sri Lanka Freedom Party (SLFP), District Leader for Colombo District its, Chief Organizer for the Moratuwa Electorate, and Central Committee Member of the Party.
